Zero-Click SEO in 2026: Winning AI Overviews and Google AI Max
AI Overviews now has over 2.5 billion monthly users, and Dynamic Search Ads are being retired into AI Max. A practical 2026 playbook for Indian businesses.

On 3 June 2026 Google told website owners that AI Overviews had passed 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode more than one billion, and handed them a Search Console toggle to opt out of both. Two weeks earlier at I/O, Google rebuilt the search box around AI Mode on Gemini 3.5 Flash. On the paid side, Dynamic Search Ads are being retired into AI Max. If you still judge search by clicks alone, 2026 breaks that scorecard.

What actually changed in Google Search in 2026

Three things moved at once. Scale: Google's 3 June 2026 post put AI Overviews above 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode above one billion. Defaults: at I/O on 19 May 2026 Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash the model behind AI Mode and extended Personal Intelligence to nearly 200 countries across 98 languages, with no subscription. Behaviour: Google says the average AI Mode search is triple the length of a traditional query, and AI Mode queries have more than doubled every quarter since launch.

  • Google says it has increased inline links inside AI responses and added website previews to encourage people to click through.
  • Preferred Sources and subscription labels now run inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, so readers can promote publishers they already trust.
  • In India, AI Mode runs in English and Hindi plus Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu after the 8 October 2025 expansion; Search Live launched here first outside the US.

How much does zero-click search actually cost you?

A lot on informational queries, less on transactional ones, and nobody outside Google knows precisely. Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords using aggregated Search Console data and reported on 4 February 2026 that an AI Overview correlated with a 58 per cent lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults through March 2025 and found a search result was clicked on 8 per cent of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15 per cent where none did. Both samples are US-centric, so trust the direction and measure the size yourself.

How does Google decide which pages AI Overviews cite?

Google's documentation is blunter than most agency decks. Its AI features guidance states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisations necessary. Eligibility is ordinary Search eligibility: indexed, and able to be shown with a snippet. Since June 2026 there is one more gate - a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console, because a site that opts out gets no traffic or impressions from them. Selection then runs through query fan-out, where both features may issue several related searches to build one response.

  • Query fan-out means one question triggers several searches, so a page written for one narrow keyword may never enter the pool.
  • nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex still govern how much of a page can be shown, and they limit AI features too.
  • Google states the generative AI opt-out is not used as a ranking signal for search results outside those features, and warns recrawling can take days to months.

Content patterns that earn AI citations

Google's optimisation guide for generative AI search, last updated 10 July 2026, says content people find unique, compelling and useful will influence your presence there more than anything else in the guide. It draws a hard line between commodity content - its own example is 'Seven Tips for First-Time Homebuyers' - and non-commodity content built on real experience, its example being 'Why We Waived the Inspection and Saved Money: A Look Inside the Sewer Line'. For an Indian services business that translates directly: publish the price you charge, the timeline you hit, the constraint that bit you last quarter.

  • Lead with a direct answer and then the nuance - not because AI demands it, but because a reader scanning an answer box does.
  • Bring a point of view no model could assemble from existing pages: your own numbers, your own projects, your own photographs, organised under clear headings.
  • Add genuine images and video, and keep Business Profile and Merchant Center current - Google names all of them as inputs to AI responses.

The AEO and GEO hacks Google says you can ignore

Google's guide includes a mythbusting section, and it aims squarely at the packages sold as 'answer engine optimisation' in India right now. Its framing is worth quoting back to any vendor pitching one: optimising for generative AI search is optimising for the search experience, and thus still SEO.

⚠️Publishing an llms.txt file and calling it AI optimisation

Consequence: Time goes into a file Google Search ignores, which its guide says will neither harm nor help visibility.

Solution: Spend the hour on crawlability, internal links and page speed. Keep llms.txt only if a non-Google system you care about reads it.

⚠️Chopping pages into tiny 'AI-friendly' chunks

Consequence: A coherent page becomes a dozen thin ones, closer to the scaled content abuse policy.

Solution: Google states there is no requirement to chunk and no ideal page length. Write one page that fully answers a cluster of questions.

⚠️Treating schema markup as the lever that wins AI citations

Consequence: Months go into markup while the work that actually decides eligibility is skipped.

Solution: Google says structured data is not required for generative AI search. Keep it for rich results, matching the visible text.

Classic SEO versus AI-citation optimisation

The work changes less than the scorecard does. What shifts is the unit you optimise, the proof you need and the number you report.

Local intent in Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru

Local is where zero-click hurts least, because the answer often is your business. Google's local ranking guidance still rests on relevance, distance and prominence, and its generative AI guide names Google Business Profile as an input to AI responses about local businesses. The work is unglamorous: one complete, verified profile per location, categories and hours that are right, photos that are yours, replies to reviews. Google is explicit that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking - a useful line to quote to anyone selling you one.

  • Keep name, address and phone identical across your site, Business Profile and every directory - the cheapest mistake to fix.
  • Reply to reviews; Google says replying shows you value feedback, and positive reviews with helpful replies help a business stand out.
  • Write one genuinely different page per city, with local pricing and local work - not a find-and-replace of the city name.
  • Answer long, spoken-style questions: Pew found an AI summary on 53 per cent of searches of ten words or more, against 8 per cent of one- or two-word searches.

How do you measure SEO visibility when clicks fall?

On 3 June 2026 Google launched Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console, rolled out worldwide by 31 August 2026. They show impressions, the pages that appeared in AI responses, countries, devices and dates down to hourly granularity, and that data also sits inside the overall performance report. Note what is missing: the dedicated view reports impressions, not clicks. Google says it will add more metrics over time, but for now visibility is the leading indicator and revenue is the lagging one, with the click no longer joining them reliably.

  • Track generative AI impressions and which URLs appear - that is your citation share, and the closest thing to a ranking report now.
  • Watch branded search and direct traffic; when people read an answer and return later by name, the citation is paying off.
  • Instrument WhatsApp taps, call clicks and form starts as conversions, and report assisted conversions, because a long AI Mode question often sits weeks before the purchase.
  • Treat vendor 'AI visibility' scores as directional only; Google warns no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.

The paid side: AI Max is replacing Dynamic Search Ads

On 15 April 2026 Google announced that AI Max for Search campaigns is moving out of beta and that legacy setups would be upgraded into it. On 11 June 2026 it revised the timeline: the Dynamic Search Ads sunset and auto-upgrade now begins in February 2027, but campaigns using automatically created assets or the campaign-level broad match setting continue to auto-upgrade from September 2026. AI Max bundles search term matching using broad match and keywordless technology, text customisation that writes ad copy from your landing pages, and final URL expansion that routes traffic to the most relevant page on your site.

  • Google's 6 May 2025 launch post says advertisers activating AI Max typically see 14 per cent more conversions or value at a similar CPA or ROAS, rising to 27 per cent for campaigns mostly using exact and phrase keywords.
  • Its 2026 figure is narrower: 7 per cent more conversions or value using the full feature suite versus search term matching alone, from Google internal data for non-Retail advertisers.
  • Controls that survive the switch: brand inclusions and exclusions, locations of interest, URL inclusions and exclusions, and text guidelines. Search terms reports now carry AI Max as a match type plus a source column.

What to set before the AI Max auto-upgrade reaches your account

An auto-upgrade mirrors your legacy setup, which is only reassuring if that setup was deliberate. Suppose a Chennai interior-design studio runs Dynamic Search Ads against a 400-page site that still hosts an old careers section and three expired offer pages. Final URL expansion will send paid traffic there unless somebody excludes it.

1
Inventory the affected campaigns

List every campaign using Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets or campaign-level broad match - the ones Google converts on the September 2026 and February 2027 schedules.

2
Decide your final URL expansion policy

Final URL expansion is on by default when you opt in. Set URL inclusions and exclusions so only pages worth paying for are eligible.

3
Set brand controls

Brand inclusions keep ads tied to your own brand terms; brand exclusions keep you away from brands you do not want to appear beside.

4
Rebuild the negative keyword list

Keywordless matching widens reach, so old negatives will not hold. Add job-seeker, DIY, free and competitor-service terms first.

5
Fix the landing pages first

Text customisation writes copy from your landing page and existing ads, so thin or price-free pages produce thin ads.

6
Baseline, then experiment

Record 30 days of conversions, CPA and ROAS, then run Google's one-click AI Max experiment. Judge it on your numbers.

A 30, 60 and 90-day zero-click search plan

You cannot rebuild a site and an ads account in a quarter, but you can fix eligibility, start measuring the right thing and get ahead of the upgrade. Run it in this order: each stage produces the evidence the next one needs.

1
Days 1-15: fix eligibility

Confirm in Search Console that the site is included in Search generative AI features, that key pages are indexed and snippet-eligible, and that no stray noindex or nosnippet is blocking your best content.

2
Days 16-30: set the new baseline

Export the Generative AI performance report by page and country, and record branded search, direct sessions and WhatsApp or call conversions.

3
Days 31-50: audit the ads account

Work through the AI Max checklist above - campaigns, URL controls, brand controls, negatives, landing pages - and experiment on your highest-spend campaign.

4
Days 51-70: publish what only you can publish

Replace two commodity posts with two non-commodity ones: real pricing, a real constraint, real photographs, each with a question heading and a direct opening answer.

5
Days 71-90: tighten local, then reallocate

Verify every Business Profile, reply to a year of reviews, rewrite your weakest city page, then compare impressions and enquiries against the day-30 baseline.
